Dropsody

A semi-improvised work inspired by Hugh Le Caine’s “Dripsody”. The performer uses an iPad to “fling” animated objects around the screen. Bubbles are heard when objects collide. All sounds are generated using a physical model of bubbles I wrote as a max external based on this paper by Kees van den Doel: www.cs.ubc.ca/~kvdoel/publications/tap05.pdf Composed in 2015. […]

Granular Video Synth Improvisation

An improvisation/experiment/work-in-progress using granular synthesis for audio and video (Max/Jitter). The video and audio components are both generated from a single image. (In the case of audio, pixel values from the image are read into a buffer). I control the synth parameters from my iPad. Fall, 2015.

Model Solar System and Stargate

I made a model solar system to help me learn opengl in jitter and to apply some of the ideas I got from Rob Hamilton’s and Chris Platz’s “Designing Musical Games” summer workshop. (Emulating their piece Echo::Canyon). The rotation/orbit speeds for the planets are more or less correct as are the relative sizes of the […]

Network Miniatures

In 2014, I made a collection of 4 short networked miniatures. The miniatures were “performed” over the network connecting the University of Calgary and the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing. A Kinect camera tracks the arm movements of each performer (1 performer at each site). Their movements control certain elements of the sound and animation. Their input is […]

Catching Echoes

An excerpt of a composition for violin, piano, and live electronics. Performed by Conor Stuart (violin) and Angelique Po (piano). “The pianist bows an invisible vibraphone and grabs sound out of thin air, while the violinist distorts sound using his mystical magic watch. Both performers play tiny invisible bells hidden under the strings and keys.” […]

Interference

From May to September 2012, I was a member of the Arts Visual Audio Sensing Technologies Project at UBC. Paige Armstrong, Megan Graf, Paul Bucci, and I worked together to create two interactive art installations at UBC. I’ve included a few pictures and video clips of the installations. For more info about the project (videos, pictures, blog […]
